When I was queuing up at the cashier in Marks & Spencer underwear section, the lady in front of me bought at least 4 sets of bright coloured, laced & sexy bras with panties. Out of curiosity, I looked at the owner of these seductive garments... she is around 40 something, small, forgot about her face, but you feel that she is an aging woman with an unattractive face.
It is something sad that she tried very hard to decorate her body with colourful underwear and try to cling on to the youth that are slipping away...? or she tried to get the best fun out of everything despite of the age and body constraint...?
I dunno the truth, but I am more of a pessimist.

I think some women have the tendency to buy clothes that they wish they could wear but they would never wear them, and they would buy them anyway. It is as if the clothes, like the bikini in your story, represent some aspect of a woman's ideal self; by buying them (or wearing them in private), she can manifest her desired self-image.
just a thought,

P.S. since you're not writing new entries, I've to read/re-read your old ones... wuwuwu~~~
Thanks for writing this.
